Zoo Project 2013

A few days ago, we've finally finished our zoo project. The zoo project is based on the Fresno Chaffee Zoo, and each group of students are assigned to make a web page on their assigned animal that their science teachers gave them. Mrs. Poole assigned us the Lady Ross's Turaco, and it is a colorful bird who origanate from Africa. Michelle, Danyeal, and I were a group together. Danyeal was in charge of the website, and Michelle and I were in charge of adding features and information to the webpage. Of course, Danyeal did some too.
The process of making our webpage was very challenging. You had to have a slideshow, presentation, infographic, where the animal is located at the zoo, interactive Google Map, Word Cloud, instant feedback quiz, survey, poster, QR Code, and a trading card. You could also do some multimedia projects for the webpage to get extra points, like making a game for example.
I was in charge of the Google Map, the instant feedback quiz, the poster, the QR Code, the slideshow, and the trading card. I have to say the hardest project I had to do was the Google Map. First of all, I had no idea how to use it. However, I used the tutorials Mr. Kimbley gave, and it turned out to be easy. Soon, I also realized that I didn't know what to put for the descriptions. However, in the end, I decided to shade in the region where the Lady Ross's Turaco lived, and then added some circular arrows on the places where the Turaco originated from. As for the description, I gave the exact places for the shaded region, and then I added small facts in the descriptions of the circular arrows. It turned out to be a good choice, because Mr. Kimbley said it was excellent and gave a good grade on it.
I also did a lot of multimedia projects, like a Fakebook for example. A Fakebook is basically a fake Facebook page which can be used for educational purposes. I had no idea what to put, so I looked at few examples, and then saw that you had to play through the character you're making the Fakebook about. I decided to play as the Lady Ross's Turaco at the zoo, and it's friends were my group members and I, the Violet Turaco (who was the cousin of the Ross's Turaco), Musophagidae (the family in which the Turaco belongs to), and the Fresno Chaffee Zoo staff. It also turned out to be a success, because Mr. Kimbley decided to use it for an example.
Overall, this project was one of the biggest projects I had to at Computech. It was 200 points, and our group got about 180 points, which was a good thing because it turned out to be one of the highest scores. It also taught me to use a lot of multimedia stuff, which could be good for future presentations, and I also learned a lot more about the Lady Ross's Turaco. This project was a good one, and I hope that next year's class could have a good time too.

Presentations In my presentation, my subject was the Crusades. I used prezi for my slideshow program because it had unique features and it had its own difference than other slideshows. It has a smooth flow during transitions, and it allows us to use free non-copyrighted pictures from websites.
I chose to do the Crusades because it was fresh in my mind and it was stuck in my head. It was one of the semi-difficult subjects, because there weren't many pictures or graphics to represent it. However, it still worked out, and I managed to complete it without hesitation, even when I was presenting it to my group! |

Multimedia Projects In Mr. Kimbley's class, we were told to make a multimedia project to back up our presentation. I chose to use Glogster as my multimedia, because it's fast, and it helped organize my information better.
As you can see, it is a Glogster about the Crusades in the Middle Ages. The map includes where each Crusade traveled and went different ways. Each Crusade had it's own tale, which is what made it so interesting to me. In conclusion, I used Glogster for this project because it was easy and very organized, and I chose the Crusades because of it's originality for each Crusade. |

Google Forms: Instant FeedbackThis time, we used Google Forms to create a quiz on our multimedia and presentation subject. Google Forms is an app that allows you to create a form or quiz. You can check who responds.
I think that Google Forms is easy because all you have to do is just create questions. However, it all depends on the type of question you make. If it's hard, then people would just skip it. If it's too easy, then people won't see the point and just not do it at all. When I was making my Instant Feedback, I was confused. I thought that we were suppose to make the answers on ANOTHER form. However, Melissa and Paige showed my how, and I was saved. Throughout this assignment, I thought it was going to be easy, however, it turned out that making quizzes weren't as easy as it seemed. You had to think of questions that allowed the students to learn, and you had to make sure that you had the answer to it. In the end, I ended up making things right as I thought it should be, according to the video Mr. Kimbley told us to watch. It was a good learning experience, and if I ever become a teacher, then I'll know what to do for my quizzes. |

Google Forms: QuizThis time, we did an official quiz for the presentation. Using the Instant Feedback quiz as practice, students will use the things that they learned from the presentation and the multimedia. While using Google Forms, I found out that there were many different varieties of types of quizzes. You can paragraphs, texts, multiple choice, and many more.
I also found out that it was easier for grading. Unlike paper quizzes, all you need to do is just check your responses with a click, and then everyone's response will be there. You just check which answer is right, and which answer is wrong. In conclusion, you can use Google Forms to make quizzes, which in my opinion is an easier and a better source. |
Grades Spreadsheet

For the past weeks, we were doing our grades spreadsheet. We had to create a custom chart, and then import our grades in it. We used formulas from Mr. Kimbley's website. We had to copy the chart 3 more times for each quarter, so there can be four charts in all. After we were done, we imported the chart into Microsoft Excel, and add sparklines and charts.
Google Spreadsheets and Microsoft Excel are very similiar. They look complicated at first glance, but after a few tutorials and some guided practice, you eventually get the hang of it.

Typing Test 1-14-13
This certificate test is a certificate, proving that I passed Mr. Kimbley's goal. The goal was to reach 25 wpm, and I typed 38 wpm. The typing test wasn't very hard, but I was mostly confused on the symbols because I had to remember which one had to use SHIFT and which other one doesn't.
FreeTypingGame.Net is a good website to use if you're a new typer. It's very easy, but if you want to learn more, then you should also use TypingWeb.

Microsoft Publisher Greeting Card

Mr. Kimbley had us make a greeting card for the holidays or any celebration. I chose Christmas because it's the closest holiday right now. It is also one of my favorite holidays. There are four sides to this card: cover, left side, right side, and back side. However, since I can't put it all up at once, I just decided to show the cover.
Microsoft Publisher is a software that allows you to create or edit your own calendar, card, brochure, and many more. It has many different features, and Mr. Kimbley has a tutorial on how to use it in his website. This software is really fun and easy to use. I had fun using the text effects, however it took me a while to figure out how to make my own. I assure you that it is very good to use when creating a printed poster for a class or a make a chart. It is very easy, and you will make any cards, calendars, or more in no time.

Power Searching With Google

This certificate was given to me because I finished PSWG, also known as Power Searching With Google. It is a website powered by Google, to help other people understand and find out what you can do when searching things on Google.
I learned that you can use Ctrl+F to find key words quickly. Also, you can find an image by clicking on a color on the left side of the tool bar when searching an image. You can find out when an update was updated (example: the Wikipedia website was updated 5 days ago), and I also found out that you can look for files, like PDF. I thought that there was only one way to use Google for searching. Type and click. But now I know that there are beyond many possibilities to learn and use on Google.

Roman Empire

This is one of the pages that I did for one of Mr. Kimbley's assignment. At the beginning of the year, we were told to write an essay about the Roman Empire, which is sort of odd because it's in the history subject.
I wrote about some of the main achievements that the Romans did, and also a little bit of their first emperor, Augustus, also known as Octavian. They created concrete roads, and made Christianity their main religion. Their official language is Latin, which by the way, had many forms of literature.
Mr. Kimbley taught us how to use GoogleDocs. He showed us how to put comments, so research, and the appropriate layout Computech wants.

My Digital Citizenship Award

I got this certificate from My Digital Life when I finished all the 7 columns and the game. My score was 445 out of 600, and Ignition is a website that allows students to learn how to use technology wisely and carefully. It teaches that you shouln't text while drive, or don't give out personal information or share any explicit photos to anybody, because who knows who they'll send it to. It was a good website, and I enjoyed it, because now I know how to confirm my privacy on the internet, what happens when you share a photo, and respet others instead of cyberbullying.
Ignition is an educational website for kids to learn more about the internet. It teaches you how to pick out a good computer, and how to avoid people hacking into your account. It has seven columns, each explaining what to avoid or what to expect. At the end, when you finish all seven columns, there is a game where you put all your newly found skills to good use. The goal of the game is to use your skills and get up to 600 tickets for the a concert to be successful.
